This major renovation of a century old Second Empire style home in San Francisco’s Pacific Heights neighborhood was a transformation of an assemblage of small dark rooms into a light filled modern residence with sweeping bay views. Remick Associates provided both architecture and construction services for the project.

Because the street side appearance of the historic structure was required to be preserved, all work occurred behind and below the existing facades. The scope of work consisted of redesigning the 3 floors of boxy rooms and reconfiguring the spaces around a new graceful curving bronze-railed stairway. Extensive below-grade excavation allowed for additional living space, including a guest room, gym, theater, wine cellar and billiard room. In addition, the once cramped garage was transformed into a steel-floored, seven car showcase for the owner’s collection of sleek automobiles.

The new staircase is the thread that unifies all levels into a cohesive whole. Adjacent to a chiseled limestone wall at the core of the home, it soars four floors in a series of wide ellipses that opens onto each floor level.

The interior materials and furnishings were carefully chosen to bridge the clients’ differing tastes; his preference being contemporary while hers leans towards the traditional. The close collaboration between the architecture and interior design teams resulted in a warm and inviting living space that satisfies and uplifts the owners; it is a perfect blend of their tastes and interests.
